Chapter Sixteen

Ethan led Ginny through the quiet streets, the moon casting a soft glow upon their path. Ajay was perched on her shoulder, his eyes gleaming with a mix of curiosity and protectiveness.

“Tell me again why that bird has to come along?” Ethan said as he stole a glance at Ajay. Ajay fluffed his feathers in protest.

“He’s my familiar. Witches have familiars that offer them companionship and provide a bit of spiritual wisdom and guidance from time to time. This guy has been with me a long time.”

Ethan shook his head, smiling. “Always full of surprises, Ginny. Can’t wait to see what else you’re going to lay on me in the near future.”

The trio arrived at the police station, its imposing facade looming before them like a sentinel guarding secrets.

The station, usually bustling with activity, now lay shrouded in silence. The dim street lights flickered, casting eerie shadows on the walls as Ethan guided Ginny towards his office. The air inside held a palpable tension, as if the room itself brimmed with the weight of hidden truths.

As they stepped inside, the scent of old books and worn leather filled the air, mingling with the faint aroma of coffee. Ethan's office was a haven of order amidst the chaos of the station. Shelves lined with case files and photographs adorned the walls, each representing a piece of someone's life waiting to be solved.

“So this is where your unique brand of magic happens, huh?” Ginny asked, her eyes twinkling with mischief.

“That’s right, and don’t you forget it.”

Ethan approached his desk, his hands trembling ever so slightly as he retrieved a weathered envelope. He turned to Ginny, a mix of concern and determination etched upon his face. "Ginny," he began, his voice laced with urgency, "I've discovered something that might shed light on Reginald's death and the secrets he carried."

Ginny's heart quickened, anticipation mingling with apprehension as she extended her hand to receive the envelope. The paper felt delicate, as if it could disintegrate with the slightest agitation. With a careful motion, she opened it, revealing a letter written in elegant cursive script.

Angry words danced across the page, inked in deep blue, as Ginny's eyes devoured the contents. Her breath hitched as she read the threatening prose, promising to expose Reginald's affair if he didn't back off on the next grant application. The letter was signed with a flourish—Victoria Worthington. The implications hit Ginny like a bolt of lightning, intertwining the web of secrets and lies that surrounded Reginald's life.

Ethan's voice broke the silence, his tone filled with empathy. "This letter suggests Katherine wasn’t the only one blackmailing Reginald St. Claire."

“Which also means Katherine was right when she said there were threats coming from elsewhere,” Ginny said thoughtfully, remembering her first interview with Katherine right after Reginald’s death. “I always thought it was strange she’d told me about that – I guess she wasn’t talking about herself after all.”

Ginny's mind whirled, the pieces of the puzzle beginning to fall into place. The room seemed to spin as she realized the magnitude of the secrets they were uncovering.
